Sea Kayaks

The name “sea kayak” is a little misleading, because sea kayaks are not built specifically for use in seawater, although they are seaworthy craft. Sea kayaks can also be found on lakes and other inland waterways. The principal attributes of a sea kayak are that it is designed for longer trips, has more cargo space, and better cruising speed. Sea kayaks are also built with covered desks, and often have an additional spraydeck.

The original sea kayaks, from which the modern boat gets its design inspiration, were built for sea hunting trips and needed to offer better protection to the occupants against the elements. The larger boat sacrificed maneuverability somewhat, but was faster, sturdier and more reliable in the rougher conditions found at sea.

Sea kayaks come in many different sizes, and are built for up to three paddlers. Most sea kayaks today are built from modern materials instead of the traditional wood and skin used for these craft before the advent of fiberglass. Sea kayaks can be manufactured as rigid or folding boats.
